“Smallville’s” ten years on the air is quite the success story, so it was no surprise that the show’s creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar were chosen to bring a fresh take to another beloved franchise with ABC’s upcoming “Charlie’s Angels.”
“We hope we are rebooting a franchise in the way ‘Casino Royale’ rebooted James Bond,” said Gough, who said the show can best be described as “glamorous but grounded.”Of course, with the feature films starring Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu having been released less than ten years ago, viewers might wonder what makes this new version so different.
“We’ll get into their personal lives a little more,” he said of the “Angels,” played by Minka Kelly, Annie Ilonzeh and Rachael Taylor. “They all have pasts: one was a cop, one was a jewel thief and one was a car thief.”
In the same way that Gough and Millar decreed “no tights, no flights” for “Smallville,” this time their rule is “No wire work , no slo-mo hair-tossing.”
The most noticeable difference in this version will be the character of Bosley, played by the not-exactly-middle-aged Ramon Rodriguez.
“We just didn’t want it to feel like the stocky middle aged uncle. Obviously there will be cases, where you want a guy to go undercover not just the angels,” Gough said. “And he’s quite frankly, some eye candy for the women.”
With the show’s Comic-Con panel coming up on Saturday, Gough promised an extended trailer for the series, and the full cast, who only got started on shooting episode two this week.
“You get that first sense of how an audience can react [at Comic-Con] -– which is really scary!” he said. “It can go one of two ways, which we’ve seen. It’s always a little nerve- wracking, showing the trailer, introducing the cast. What’s great about TV is that it is sort of an ongoing conversation with an audience. It was great to go back year after year and see what they like and don’t like - and they’ll tell you. [Comic-Con] is actually built for TV series even more than movies."
